The Royals acquired Anthony Lerew in 2009 hoping a change of scenery might breath some life back into a player who was considered a solid bet to become a mid-to-back-end arm for the Braves a few years ago. However that doesn't seem to be going well. Lerew was competing for a rotation spot this spring but has been beaten out by John Parrish who didn't pitch at all last year.
Where Lerew's career goes from here remains to be seen. Since he's out of options the Royals designated him for assignment, giving the club 10 days to trade him. He could also clear waivers and chose to accept an assignment to the minors. To me that seems to be the best bet. Lerew needs a chance more than anything, and on how many teams is he more likely to receive that chance?
